OLD STONES OF 1967 by CHIKA VICTOR ONYENEZI

The signal was short and inviting

Calling on connoisseurs soldiers

To seal a relieve on their compatriot

It is written, clutching the mark-4 rifle

Stormed to stem the federal troops

Advancing into honey land biafra.

When you lift the stone it says 1967

When ploy was a measure against arsenal

Barefooted soldiers borrowed from their fathers wisdom

Biafran warlord sang duet with Gowon

The smell of sulphur in their old khaki

Unexploded dynamo

Ticking with time in every resurrection of Biafra.

The saturated atmosphere of time

Virgin time

Still menstruating, having it period in our mind

Though no victor no vanquish `

But still sheds its oval written

"Those conquered in war by.........".

Kaleidoscopic time, blameless history

Refusing to ebb in our mind

Who can incarcerate time?

From the old stones of 1967.
